Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda Continues to Inspire the Industry with “Golden Steering Wheel” Award
Akio Toyoda, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Toyota, the world’s most preferred car manufacturer, has been honored with the Golden Steering Wheel Award, one of Europe’s most prestigious automotive awards. The jury members recognized Akio Toyoda with the Golden Steering Wheel in the lifetime achievement category for his success as Toyota‘s president and his inspirational style within the industry.
The Golden Steering Wheel Award, presented since 1976, is considered one of the most prestigious accolades in the European automotive world. The honorary awards, added in 1983, are given to influential leaders who have made significant contributions to the industry.
Akio Toyoda’s Journey to Global Success
Akio Toyoda began his success story at Toyota in 2009 when he took the helm of the company. Under Toyoda’s leadership, Toyota significantly advanced its financial and operational results in many major markets, including Europe. Toyoda, who was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2023, continues to base Toyota’s strategic direction on core philosophies like “Mobility for All.” The Golden Steering Wheel jury also underscored Toyoda’s passion for automobiles, in addition to his ability to manage the company.

Akio Toyoda, driven by the passion to make ever-better cars, personally takes on the role of Master Driver in vehicle development while also enjoying racing on the track.
Stating that the legendary Nürburgring Track holds a special place in his personal development, Akio Toyoda began racing on tracks by following the advice of his mentor, Hiromu Naruse, about cars. Toyoda raced numerous times at the Nürburgring under the pseudonym “Morizo,” and also participated in the famous Nürburgring race.
Regarded as one of the most influential and passionate individuals in the international automotive industry, Akio Toyoda expressed great honor in his acceptance speech for the lifetime achievement award. He said, “I thank you for recognizing the passion and dedication that I share with Toyota employees worldwide. I also want to thank our customers. They are our true inspiration and the reason I am here today. I must also state that as an industry, we are going through a profound transformation. I believe we need to work together more than ever. We all have a responsibility to use the resources we have to improve people’s lives.”
