German automaker Opel has quickly captured attention in the automotive world with its latest innovation—the new Grandland, a premium SUV that reflects the brand’s bold and pure design philosophy. But beyond its striking design and advanced technology, the Grandland carries on a unique Opel tradition that started two decades ago—with hidden sharks.

Yes, you read that right—small shark motifs are cleverly hidden in various interior parts of Opel vehicles. This quirky and beloved design element, which began with a child’s suggestion in 2004, has now become a symbol of Opel’s fun-loving spirit and attention to detail. The sharks are back and swimming strong in the new Opel Grandland, as well as in the recently introduced Opel Frontera and other models in the lineup.

A Premium SUV with a Playful Twist

The award-winning Grandland doesn’t just impress with features like Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix LED headlamps, Intelli-Seat comfort seats, and a semi-transparent Pixel Box center console—it also surprises occupants with tiny, hidden sharks. These charming details aren’t obvious; you’ll have to act like a detective to find them. Some may be tucked behind panels, hidden in storage areas, or positioned near wireless charging pads—only visible from certain angles.

This engaging design element is part of Opel’s broader mission to combine German engineering with a joyful user experience, all while emphasizing sustainability. The Grandland includes electric variants and uses a wide range of recycled materials, aligning with Opel’s “Greenovation” approach. As a result, even the hidden sharks feel at home in this modern and eco-conscious SUV.

The Origin: A Shark, a Sketch, and a Spark of Creativity

The hidden shark story dates back to 2004. Opel designer Dietmar Finger was working on the glove box surface of the upcoming Corsa D when his young son looked at the sketch and said, “Why don’t you just draw a shark?” That playful suggestion led to a small shark-shaped ridge being added to the plastic pattern. The idea was pitched to the design chief, who loved it—and just like that, the first Opel shark made it into production.

The tradition continued with the Zafira, where designer Karim Giordimaina added three sharks to the dashboard. Over the years, these small design Easter eggs made their way into various models including the Opel ADAM, Astra, and Astra Sports Tourer. Now, the new Opel Grandland carries the torch.

Opel’s Playful Legacy Lives On

Today, each new Opel model includes at least one shark hidden somewhere inside. It’s become a well-guarded secret—locations are known only to the design team and kept hidden even from Opel executives until the model launch. This turns the shark hunt into an exciting game not just for customers, but also for Opel insiders.

Speaking about the tradition, Opel Design Director Karim Giordimaina said:

“These small details are proof of the care and passion our designers pour into every model. Many of our customers are already excited to go shark hunting in their next Opel.”

With the Grandland, the shark tradition continues—and in the years ahead, it will live on in future models. Each vehicle will offer a new hideout, a fresh surprise, and another reason to fall in love with Opel. For brand fans and first-time buyers alike, the search for hidden sharks turns every Opel drive into a delightful discovery.
