Continental Takes Another Green Step: Turning Waste Oils Into Synthetic Rubber
Continental is accelerating the use of renewable and recycled materials in tire production. By 2030, the company aims for at least 40% sustainable content in its products. The latest breakthrough comes from transforming waste cooking oils and vegetable oils into synthetic rubber, marking another milestone in sustainable innovation.
From Waste Oil to High-Performance Tires
Natural rubber has long been a key raw material for mobility—from cars and trucks to bicycles and industrial vehicles. While Continental continues to use natural rubber in conventional manufacturing, the company is increasingly integrating synthetic rubber made from waste oils supplied by ISCC PLUS-certified partners.
This approach reduces environmental impact without compromising tire durability or performance. Circular resins derived from waste and vegetable oils also bring multiple benefits:
- Improved wet grip for safer driving
- Enhanced wear resistance for longer tire life
- Lower rolling resistance, boosting energy efficiency
Commenting on this achievement, Jorge Almeida, Director of Sustainability at Continental Tires, said:
“We are closing the loop. With our innovative solutions, we are committing even more strongly to a circular economy.”
First Use of Bio-Circular TMQ Additive
In addition, Continental has introduced LANXESS’s bio-circular acetone-based TMQ additive for the first time, another move toward eco-friendly tire manufacturing. Compared to conventional alternatives, this additive offers at least a 30% lower carbon footprint.
Thanks to the mass balance approach, the use of renewable and recycled raw materials can be transparently tracked and certified across the entire value chain. Matthias Haufe, Head of Material Development at Continental Tires, emphasized:
“This method allows us to manage the complexity of raw material use and demonstrate our progress with full transparency.”
Leading the Way in Sustainable Mobility
Through innovative material technologies and a responsible supply chain strategy, Continental is setting the course for greener mobility. The company continues to lead the industry’s transition toward a sustainable future for tire production.
