Opel Vivaro Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary – A Quarter Century of Versatility and Innovation
German automaker Opel is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its versatile light commercial vehicle, the Opel Vivaro. First unveiled at the 2000 IAA Commercial Vehicles Motor Show, the Vivaro laid the foundation for what has become a long-standing success story. Known for its durability, practicality, and everyday usability, the Vivaro has become a favorite among both industry professionals and customers alike. Over the years, it has received multiple awards, including being named “International Van of the Year” twice.
Opel has consistently invested in innovation for the Vivaro. In 2010, the company revealed the groundbreaking Vivaro e-Concept, a fully electric prototype that anticipated the future of commercial mobility. Since 2020, the Vivaro has been available in an electric version, and in early 2024, Opel launched the latest generation with cutting-edge technologies, advanced comfort, and passenger car-level design features. Today, the Vivaro – also manufactured in Turkey – continues to serve professionals worldwide with flexible solutions for every business need.
A True All-Rounder for 25 Years

The Opel Vivaro, produced in Turkey as well, remains a highly versatile partner for commercial clients and fleet operators. Whether as a delivery van, service vehicle, or flexible transporter, it has maintained its reputation for adaptability for a quarter of a century. Following its world premiere in 2000, the Vivaro quickly became a key model in Opel’s LCV portfolio. Its robust build and user-friendly features have made it a reliable choice, winning over experts and end-users alike.
Beyond awards and recognition, Opel showcased forward-looking innovations with the Vivaro – most notably the all-electric Vivaro e-Concept, introduced in 2010, which foreshadowed the electric Vivaro launched a decade later.
From Opel Arena to the First Vivaro Series

Opel’s modern LCV journey began with the Opel Arena, introduced in 1997. Two years later, the first Opel Movano entered the market. Then, at the 2000 IAA Commercial Vehicles Show, Opel revealed the all-new Vivaro – a model that would redefine the brand’s presence in the light commercial segment.
The Vivaro distinguished itself with a striking design, high safety standards, and excellent efficiency. Its most iconic feature was the “Jumbo Roof,” a domed cabin design that not only provided outstanding headroom but also made entering and exiting the vehicle easier – a major plus for delivery drivers.
Launched in 2001 with front-wheel drive, efficient diesel engines, and a six-speed manual gearbox, the Vivaro offered driving dynamics comparable to passenger cars. This earned it the prestigious 2002 International Van of the Year award.
Customers could choose from more than 20 body configurations, multiple wheelbase lengths, and cargo capacities up to 6 m³, making the Vivaro a benchmark for practicality and ergonomics.
Visionary Concepts – From Luxury Vans to Electric Futures
Opel explored bold new directions with several Vivaro concepts:
-
Vivaro Concept V (2001): A luxury multimedia van with leather and Alcantara trim, high-tech infotainment, and conference seating.
-
Vivaro VPC (2007): A sporty, OPC-inspired model with enhanced performance and a distinctive body kit.
-
Vivaro Surf Concept (2015): Designed for leisure, featuring 4 m³ cargo capacity, surfboard roof racks, and lowered suspension for easier access.
-
Vivaro e-Concept (2010): A visionary electric panel van with a 400 km range and 151 hp, paving the way for today’s e-mobility solutions.
The Electric Era – Vivaro A, B, and the All-New Vivaro
Production of the first-generation Vivaro ended in 2014, when the Vivaro B was introduced with a refreshed design and improved versatility. In 2019, Opel unveiled the third-generation Vivaro, offered for the first time with a fully electric powertrain. Customers could select from two lithium-ion battery sizes – 75 kWh (up to 330 km range) or 50 kWh (up to 230 km range) – enabling zero-emission transport for everyday business use. In 2021, the Vivaro Electric earned the International Van of the Year award, echoing the success of the original.

In early 2024, Opel introduced the newest Vivaro with a refreshed identity, highlighted by the brand’s signature Opel Vizor front face. Built in Turkey and available across Europe, the new Vivaro comes with both electric and diesel powertrains, as well as multiple lengths (4.98 m and 5.33 m) and body styles (panel van and city van). Depending on configuration, it offers up to 6.6 m³ of cargo space and a payload of around 1.4 tons.
Advanced driver-assistance systems enhance safety and convenience, including Blind Spot Alert, Active Lane Keep Assist, and Driver Drowsiness Detection. Inside, the digital cockpit features a 10-inch driver display and a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, blending proven LCV practicality with modern passenger car technology.
For 25 years, the Opel Vivaro has been a benchmark in the light commercial vehicle segment – combining versatility, durability, and forward-looking innovation. From the “Jumbo Roof” of the first generation to the fully electric models of today, Vivaro continues to evolve, meeting the demands of professionals worldwide while staying true to its heritage of practicality and reliability.
