BMW Group has revealed its 2024 financial results and future strategy in a digital press conference.

In 2024, the company made significant investments in innovative technologies, its model lineup, and global production infrastructure. For 2025, BMW Group aims to optimize R&D spending and capital investments while maintaining profitability.

Strategic Investments and Profitability Plans for 2025

In 2024, BMW Group made significant investments in innovative technologies, its model lineup, and global production infrastructure. For 2025, the company plans to streamline R&D expenses and capital investments while maintaining profit margins at previous-year levels.

With a strategy to introduce over 40 new or updated models by 2027, BMW Group is progressively transitioning its lineup to the NEUE KLASSE architecture.

BMW Group Expands Electrification Efforts

With more than 15 electric models across its brands, BMW Group boosted global electric vehicle (EV) sales by 13.5% in 2024, reaching 426,536 units and securing an over 17% market share. The BMW brand itself recorded 368,523 EV sales, marking an 11.6% increase, while MINI sold 56,181 electric units, making one in four MINIs electric.

BMW Group also reported 593,215 combined sales of PHEV and BEV models in 2024 and has set an ambitious target of delivering 1.5 million fully electric vehicles in 2025. Since the launch of BMW i3 and BMW i8, the company has placed three million electric vehicles on the road.

Advancing Hydrogen and Next-Gen Mobility

As part of its commitment to technological openness, BMW Group is developing a broad powertrain portfolio. The company aims to become the first premium automaker to mass-produce a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle by 2028, strengthening its collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation.

Meanwhile, the NEUE KLASSE production will commence in late 2025, with the BMW iX3 being the first model. This all-electric SUV will be manufactured at BMW Group’s Debrecen plant, the company’s first dedicated EV factory.

A Digital Future: Software-Defined Vehicles and Smart Integration

BMW Group has reengineered its software-defined vehicle architecture, featuring a new digital neural network powered by four high-performance computing units. These units will enhance in-car infotainment, autonomous driving, dynamic performance, and core vehicle functions.

BMW Group aims to exceed 10 million over-the-air (OTA) updatable vehicles by 2025, ensuring software enhancements keep models future-proof.

Revolutionizing the Driving Experience

A new “Heart of Joy” software platform, developed entirely in-house, will power future BMW models. This next-gen dynamic performance control system will be integrated into all-electric BMWs, enhancing efficiency, braking, and energy recovery. The system improves efficiency by 25%, while energy regeneration reduces reliance on traditional friction braking.

BMW Group will showcase its Vision Driving Experience prototype in April 2025 at Auto Shanghai, demonstrating the full capabilities of Heart of Joy.

BMW Panoramic iDrive: Next-Level Driver Interaction

Building on two decades of iDrive innovation, BMW has introduced the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with a widescreen head-up display, BMW 3D Head-Up Display, and advanced multifunction steering wheel. The system operates via touch, voice control, or AI-based interaction, leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) for enhanced driver assistance.

Powered by the new BMW Operating System X, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), this technology allows for seamless updates, deep personalization, and real-time system optimization.

Sixth-Generation BMW eDrive Technology

BMW Group will debut its sixth-generation eDrive system in the NEUE KLASSE electric models, manufactured at its Landshut facility. This advanced technology increases energy density by 20%, enables 30% faster charging, and extends driving range by at least 30%. Some models will achieve 900 km (559 miles) of range, with 300 km (186 miles) gained in just 10 minutes of charging.

Expanding Model Portfolio and Market Leadership

BMW Group continues to broaden its product range, having refreshed its lineup across key segments over the past two years:

  • The fourth-generation BMW X3 debuted as one of the company’s best-selling models.
  • The BMW 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupé were updated for the entry-level market.
  • The BMW 3 Series and 4 Series received significant upgrades.
  • The BMW iX now offers a 700 km+ WLTP-certified electric range.
  • BMW M models set a 13th consecutive sales record in 2024.
  • MINI completed its brand transformation with the launch of the new MINI Cooper Cabrio.
  • BMW Motorrad achieved its highest-ever sales, led by GS adventure bikes, R12 models, and high-performance sport tourers.

BMW Group’s Multi-Billion-Euro Investment in Innovation

BMW Group allocated over €18 billion in 2024 to R&D and capital expenditures, focusing on electrification, digitalization, and next-generation technology.

For the 2024 fiscal year, BMW Group met its revised business targets, generating €142.38 billion in revenue—a 4.1% increase—solidifying its position as a global leader in the premium automotive sector.

NEUE KLASSE: The Pinnacle of Future Investment

BMW Group‘s R&D spending surged to €9.08 billion, while capital investments reached €9.06 billion, resulting in a 6.4% investment ratio for the 12-month period. The company remains committed to driving the future of mobility with NEUE KLASSE, marking one of the most transformative projects in its history.
