Toyota has officially inaugurated the much-anticipated Toyota Woven City. First announced at CES 2020, the groundbreaking project has now come to life in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture with an opening ceremony.

This “living laboratory” city is designed to test advanced technologies and mobility solutions in a real-world environment. From autonomous vehicles and robotic systems to smart infrastructure and next-generation energy solutions, Woven City provides a unique testing ground where innovations are experienced and validated by real users.

The First Residents: The “Weavers”

With the official opening, the first group of residents, known as “Weavers,” have moved into the city. Composed of Toyota employees and their families, this community will live in Woven City, experiencing new products and services while providing valuable feedback. Around 300 residents are expected in the initial phase, and from 2026 onwards, the city will also begin welcoming general visitors.

The “Inventors”: Driving Innovation Together

Another core community at the heart of Woven City is the “Inventors,” made up of entrepreneurs, research institutions, and innovative companies. A total of 20 Inventors will collaborate with Toyota’s manufacturing expertise and Woven by Toyota’s software capabilities to co-develop pioneering projects.

Among the prominent participants is renowned Japanese singer-songwriter Naoto Inti Raymi, who has taken on the city’s musical theme and composed an exclusive anthem for the project.

A Milestone in Toyota’s Transformation into a Mobility Company

Akio Toyoda

Toyota has been steadily advancing its vision of transforming into a mobility company, first outlined at CES 2018. Woven City is more than just a city — it is a real-life testbed for future mobility solutions, where innovation meets community to create a brighter future.

At the opening ceremony, Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating:

“At Woven City, we are initiating ‘Kakezan,’ the multiplier effect. No company can make a meaningful impact alone. We must work together, smile together. Here, we will touch a brighter future.”
