Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors Strengthen Strategic Partnership with Five New Models by 2028
Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors (GM) are taking their strategic partnership to the next level, announcing plans to co-develop five new vehicles that will hit global markets starting in 2028. This collaboration aims to deliver both conventional and electrified models tailored to different regions, with the goal of exceeding 800,000 annual sales once production reaches full capacity.
Expanding into Key Global Markets
As part of the plan, Hyundai and GM will focus on two major regions:
-
Latin America (Central and South America): Four new models powered by internal combustion or hybrid powertrains will be developed. These will include a compact SUV, a passenger car, a pickup truck, and a mid-size pickup.
-
North America: A fully electric commercial van will be introduced, reflecting both companies’ commitment to electrification and the growing demand for sustainable transportation.
Production of the Latin American lineup is scheduled to begin with regional launches in 2028, while the electric van is expected to debut in the U.S. market the same year.
Platform Leadership and Brand Identity
The partnership divides leadership roles across vehicle categories:
-
GM will spearhead platform development for the mid-size pickup.
-
Hyundai will take the lead on compact vehicle platforms and the fully electric commercial van.
Despite shared platforms, both brands will maintain their unique design languages and brand identities, ensuring distinct exterior and interior styling across Hyundai and GM models.
Commitment to Innovation and Scale
Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO José Muñoz emphasized the strategic value of the partnership:
“Our collaboration with GM enables us to provide greater value and broader choices to customers across various segments and markets. Leveraging our combined scale in North and South America will allow us to deliver high-quality, safety-focused, and technologically advanced vehicles more efficiently.”
Beyond Vehicle Development: Supply Chain and Sustainability
In addition to product development, Hyundai and GM are also exploring joint supply chain initiatives. These include shared sourcing of materials, logistics, and transportation solutions across North and South America. Potential cooperation areas extend to raw materials, components, and key automotive systems.
Aligned with their sustainability commitments, both companies are also considering collaboration on low-carbon steel production, supporting their mutual efforts to reduce carbon footprints in manufacturing.
Looking Ahead
The agreement, initially signed in September 2024, represents a significant step forward in long-term cooperation between Hyundai and GM. Both automakers will continue to explore joint programs for global markets, spanning a wide range of powertrains — from internal combustion and hybrid systems to battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.
With these initiatives, Hyundai and GM aim not only to expand their presence in crucial markets but also to accelerate the transition toward more efficient, innovative, and sustainable mobility solutions.
