Stellantis Unveils Pedal-Steering Alfa Romeo Tonale on Disabled Persons Day
Stellantis, one of the world’s largest mobility companies, reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive mobility on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The company introduced its innovative solution, the ‘Alfa Romeo Tonale for All,’ designed to boost mobility freedom for drivers with limited arm and hand function.
The Tonale for All utilizes a dual-motor electromechanical structure, allowing drivers to manage steering via the pedals. A raised and specially designed console ensures easy access to essential vehicle controls, including the gear selector, horn, window controls, lights, electric brake, voice commands, and USB ports. The central console, notably, complies with ECE 21 crash safety standards, designed with rounded edges and minimal intrusion into the cabin volume.
Investing in every aspect of mobility, Stellantis continues to impact the lives of its users. On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Stellantis highlighted its dedication to inclusive mobility by unveiling the Alfa Romeo Tonale for All (Tonale for All), an innovative solution developed in Italy to enhance mobility freedom for drivers with limited arm and hand function.
Accessibility Driven by Innovation

The Tonale for All stands out as a model reflecting Stellantis’s approach to universal accessibility, combining practical solutions, advanced engineering, and user-centric design. Developed in collaboration with Centro Ricerche Fiat (CRF) and Fadiel Italiana, this special version integrates advanced solutions that offer a safe and confident driving experience for individuals with limitations in arm and hand functions.
Key features of the Tonale for All:
-
Pedal Steering System (DGS03): The dual-motor electromechanical structure allows drivers to control steering using the pedals. The system architecture is designed to be fully redundant (motors, batteries, and control units) and is supported by a TFT screen for continuous status monitoring.
-
Ergonomic Central Console: Produced using additive manufacturing, the raised and specially designed console provides easy access to essential vehicle controls, including the gear selector, horn, window controls, lights, electric brake, voice commands, and USB ports. The layout is optimized for accessibility, comfort, and ease of use.
-
Safety and Certification: The central console complies with ECE 21 crash safety standards, designed with rounded edges and minimal interior volume interference. The Tonale for All received homologation from the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport under the status of a “unique example.”
A Practical Manifestation of Inclusivity
The Tonale for All concretely demonstrates how technical innovations can expand independence and freedom of movement. Solutions developed under this project are adaptable across the Stellantis portfolio and can be customized to individual needs, adhering to local medical commission requirements and regulations.
The Tonale for All further advances Stellantis’s commitment to inclusive mobility, building upon the “Citroën Ami for All” project, which originated in 2020 within Stellantis’s internal startup acceleration program, Start up. Developed in collaboration with PIMAS, the Citroën Ami for All offers an accessible, practical, and independent mobility solution, particularly for wheelchair users. The compact electric vehicle provides comfortable ingress, adapted driving controls, and safe transport for the wheelchair, ensuring freedom of movement, social participation, and independence in daily life.
30 Years of Experience in Inclusive Mobility

The Stellantis Autonomy Program, launched in 1995, has made significant progress in inclusive mobility for 30 years and today operates through 14 Mobility Centers across Italy. These centers offer personalized consultation on driving assessments, psychological and motor skills tests, and technical adaptations, supporting over individuals annually in accessing independent mobility. The program spans all Stellantis brands, aiming to make mobility accessible to everyone by integrating research in product development, ergonomics, and safety with personalized services.
DriveAbility Program and Commitment to Inclusive Mobility
As the first automaker to enter the U.S. mobility market, Stellantis launched the DriveAbility Program, which offers vehicles suitable for adaptive modifications to enhance the daily driving experience. The program aims to ensure an enjoyable experience from the moment of vehicle entry to starting the drive, offering various equipment options for acceleration, braking, gear shifting, and steering control. The program collaborates with adaptive equipment manufacturers across the country to develop the best solutions, supporting drivers to remain active, independent, and mobile.
Through the Autonomy and DriveAbility programs, Stellantis supports the experience of freedom and independence for individuals with motor, sensory, or cognitive limitations across its entire vehicle portfolio. Projects like the Tonale for All, built upon the Citroën Ami for All program, reaffirm Stellantis’s continuous mission: to deliver mobility solutions that work for everyone, without compromising safety, performance, or design.
